Manifesto

Recent news articles indicate that solar power might become economically viable for the masses by 2010. This blog tracks my thoughts and findings on this topic.

Why is this interesting you ask? This could result in the capitalization of the energy infrastructure. In other words, we are looking at a potential worldwide investment to the tune of $3T (as in trillion) in the following decade. Here's how I come to that conclusion:

According to the US department of energy, the world consumes 28B barrels of oil every year. At $30/barrel that's about $800B/yr.

Now lets assume that we can replace a fraction of this, say 25%, with a solar infrastructure that requires little maintainence and runs for 30 yrs. How much capital would you be willing to put down for this replacement? Now add to this the fact that China and India are going to increase the world's demand for energy, and you'll start to see why this is interesting.
